The Word Problem for Semigroups 1 Semigroup Equations
نویسنده
چکیده
is not always true for square integer matricesM and N . The most basic example of a semigroup is the set, Σ∗, of strings over an alphabet, Σ, where the binary operation is concatenation. In fact, we take the associativity of concatenation so much for granted that we typically write xyz for the concatenation of x, y, z ∈ Σ∗, without bothering to indicate whether they were concatenated as (x ◦ y) ◦ z or as x ◦ (y ◦ z), since of course it doesn’t make any difference. When Σ∗ is regarded as a semigroup under concatenation, it is traditional to refer to the strings in Σ∗ as words.

A Solvable Conjugacy Problem for Finitely Presented C(3) Semigroups
In his thesis, Remmers [R], introduced semigroup derivation diagrams and used them to prove that the word problem for finitely presented C(3) semigroups was solvable. In this article we introduce the annular analog of semigroup derivation diagrams and use them to demonstrate the solution to a conjugacy problem for finitely presented C(3) semigroups. متن کاملDecision and Separability Problems for Baumslag-Solitar Semigroups
We show that the semigroups Sk,` having semigroup presentations 〈a, b : abk = b`a〉 are residually finite and finitely separable. Generally, these semigroups have finite separating images which are finite groups and other finite separating images which are semigroups of order-increasing transformations on a finite partially ordered set. These semigroups thus have vastly different residual and se...
متن کاملOn the Complexity of the Word Problem of Automaton Semigroups and Automaton Groups
In this paper, we study the word problem of automaton semigroups and automaton groups from a complexity point of view. As an intermediate concept between automaton semigroups and automaton groups, we introduce automaton-inverse semigroups, which are generated by partial, yet invertible automata. We show that there is an automaton-inverse semigroup and, thus, an automaton semigroup with a PSpace...
متن کاملOn the decidability of the word problem for amalgamated free products of inverse semigroups
We study inverse semigroup amalgams [S1, S2;U ], where S1 and S2 are finitely presented inverse semigroups with decidable word problem and U is an inverse semigroup with decidable membership problem in S1 and S2. We use a modified version of Bennett’s work on the structure of Schützenberger graphs of the R-classes of S1 ∗U S2 to state sufficient conditions for the amalgamated free products S1 ∗...
متن کاملAmalgams of Free Inverse Semigroups
We study inverse semigroup amalgams of the form S U T where S and T are free inverse semigroups and U is an arbitrary nitely generated inverse subsemigroup of S and T. We make use of recent work of Bennett to show that the word problem is decidable for any such amalgam. This is in contrast to the general situation for semigroup amalgams, where recent work of Birget, Margolis and Meakin shows th...
متن کاملDecision problems for word-hyperbolic semigroups
This paper studies decision problems for semigroups that are word-hyperbolic in the sense of Duncan &Gilman. A fundamental investigation reveals that the natural definition of a ‘word-hyperbolic structure’ has to be strengthened slightly in order to define a unique semigroup up to isomorphism. The isomorphism problem is proven to be undecidable for word-hyperbolic semigroups (in contrast to the...
